Every product on this site sits on one of two bases. That’s the whole system: a product is either vegan or it is non-vegan, and the badge is on the label and on the listing.
Plant oils only
Olive, coconut, shea, castor and hemp oils over distilled water and lye. Nothing from an animal goes in — no tallow, no lard, no beeswax, no lanolin, no goat milk, no honey.
- Softer, brighter lather that comes up quickly
- Colored with clays and botanicals
- Scented with essential oils, or left unscented
- The choice most people want for a gift
Prepared in and with color coded kitchen equipment so that your experience remains truly plant-based.
Animal-fat and milk bases
The same plant oils, plus one animal-derived ingredient. Most of the non-vegan line is built on rendered grass-fed beef tallow, which makes a genuinely hard bar — and a hard bar is what survives a family shower. Two bars use goat milk alongside the tallow, and Morning Java is built on lard.
- Dense, low, creamy lather
- Lasts noticeably longer in the shower
- Essential oils or skin-safe fragrance
- Phthalate-free, paraben-free, never tested on animals
Which animal ingredients we use, and where
| Ingredient | Which products |
|---|---|
| Grass-fed beef tallow | Eye of the Tiger, Charcoal & Cedar, Cashmere Plum, Unmasqued, Heather & Thyme, Pups & Peeps Soap, Pups & Peeps Paw Balm |
| Goat milk | Unmasqued, Heather & Thyme, Pups & Peeps Spa Soak Bomb |
| Lard | Morning Java |
The badge follows the base, not the scent
Some scents appear across several products that are built on different bases. Cashmere Plum and Eye of the Tiger are non-vegan as bar soaps, because those bars are built on tallow — but the same two scents in the Liquid Castile Soap, the Shea Butter Lotion and the Solid Shampoo Bar are vegan, because those products are not. Read the badge on the listing you are actually buying, not the one you remember. This also gives you options against other products to have that scent in the category you want, vegan or non-vegan.
How to tell which one you’re holding
Look for the badge. A sage-green Vegan pill means plant oils only. An amber Non-Vegan pill means there is an animal-derived ingredient in it — tallow, goat milk or lard. It’s printed on every wrapper and it’s at the top of every product page.
If a listing doesn’t have a badge, that’s a mistake on our end — tell us and we’ll fix it the same day.
Which should you buy?
If you avoid animal ingredients for any reason, buy vegan; you’re not giving anything up, and most of the range is vegan. If you want the longest-lasting bar you can get and you’re not fussed about tallow, buy non-vegan.
What did not change
Both lines are cold-process, made in small batches, cut by hand and cured a full six weeks before they ship. Both have the entire ingredient list printed where you can read it. Both are made by us, in the same kitchen, on the same bench.
Questions about a specific ingredient? The ingredients & allergens page lists every oil and what it’s doing in there.
